Your role as a first aider

What first aid is for

First aid can stop an injury getting worse, help someone recover, and save a life.

1
Keep yourself safe.Check the scene is safe before you go in.
2
Assess and prioritise.Work out what's happened and what matters most, so you can act safely, promptly and effectively.
3
Call for help early.Call 999. If you're on your own, use your phone's speaker so your hands are free.
4
Only use what you're trained to use, whether that's equipment or medicines.
5
Prevent cross-infection.Wear gloves if you have them.
6
Write it down.Record what happened and what you did.
