Use FAST.Checking with FAST helps you spot a stroke quickly.
  • F — Face: is one side of their face drooping? Can they smile evenly?
  • A — Arms: can they raise both arms and keep them there?
  • S — Speech: can they speak clearly?
  • T — Time: time to call 999.

Call 999 if you see any of these signs.

Keep them comfortable.Reassure them while you wait.

Nothing to eat or drink.They may find it hard to swallow.

Monitor them.Keep checking how responsive they are until help arrives. If they become unresponsive and aren't breathing normally, start CPR.

Other signs

Numbness, blurred vision, confusion, dizziness, a headache or feeling sick.

What to tell the ambulance

The call handler will guide you. Tell them where you are and that you think the person is having a stroke.
