Drowning

1
Stay safe.If you're not trained in water rescue, don't go into the water. If they're responsive, reach out to them from land with something that floats, like a lifebuoy or rescue tube.
2
Call 999.
3
Get them onto land as soon as possible.
4
Five rescue breaths first. If they're unresponsive and not breathing, give five rescue breaths straight away, then start CPR. If you can't give rescue breaths, start chest compressions and don't stop.
5
Defibrillator. If there's an AED, dry their chest quickly and follow its prompts.

Adults too

This is different from the CPR page. Normally you start on the chest with an adult. After drowning, give the five breaths first, whatever their age.

If they're breathing

Put them in the recovery position. Keep them warm: swap wet clothes for dry ones if you can, and cover them with coats or blankets.

Afterwards

Even if they seem well, they need to see a doctor. They may need to be watched in hospital for a while.
