Asthma attack

Sit them up.Reassure them, and ask them to breathe slowly and deeply.

Their reliever inhaler.Help them use their own reliever inhaler (usually blue), with a spacer if there's one.

Keep going.One puff every 30 to 60 seconds, up to 10 puffs.

Call 999 if they get worse, or aren't better after 10 puffs, or if it's their first attack.

If help hasn't arrived in 10 minutes, repeat step 3. If they're still no better, call 999 again.

If they use a MART or AIR inhaler

These work differently. Follow their own asthma action plan if they have one.

If they get better without an ambulance, they should see their GP or asthma nurse the same day.
